| Hunger does not exist because the world does not produce enough food. We have the experience and the technology right now to end the problem. The challenge we face is not production of food and wealth, but more equitable distribution. It would take a modest effort to end hunger and malnutrition worldwide. Hunger is a political condition. And so the key to overcoming hunger is to change the politics of hunger.
A number of issues effect those who live at or below the poverty level or those who are the "working poor," a new class of citizens who make more than the federal poverty threshold, but not enough to get by. Some of the issues effecting our neighbors include:
- health care and insurance
- food assistance programs like Food Stamps, WIC, or school lunch and summer lunch programs
- employment issues such as minimum wage and unemployment benefits
- housing issues such as housing assistance or rent control
- tax reform
- welfare programs
- energy and fuel assistance
As the Food Bank continues to grow, we will strive to educate the public about hunger, and bring poverty to the forefront of discussion. Poverty has not been part of public debate and many people remain blind to the growing number of poor and hungry in our state. We hope you will join us in this fight to bring relief to those who need it.
