Nation’s largest warehouse club helps address statewide hunger

MANCHESTER, NH March 14, 2007 —The New Hampshire Food Bank, a program of the New Hampshire Catholic Charities, accepted a $5,000 donation from Sam’s Club, the nation’s largest warehouse club. The donation was announced in a check-presentation ceremony at the New Hampshire Food Bank Manchester facility yesterday.

The money donated by Sam’s Club will be used to replenish the Food Bank’s under stocked shelves.

“The New Hampshire Food Bank is very grateful for the generosity that the Sam’s Club and the entire Wal-Mart Corporation have displayed,” said Melanie Gosselin, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Food Bank. “This donation will be very useful in addressing the needs New Hampshire’s hungry and comes in a time of great need.”

The New Hampshire Food Bank, the state’s only food bank, distributes over 4 million pounds of donated, surplus food to over 350 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, day care centers, senior citizen homes and substance abuse treatment centers. The Food Bank has experienced an increase demand for services of more than 40 percent in the last year while experiencing significant inventory shortages.

Last month, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc, the parent company of Sam’s Club, presented a check for $8,500 to the New Hampshire Food Bank.
