Operation Frontline has been in New Hampshire since 2000, but only partnered with the New Hampshire Food Bank in 2004 and now serves the entire state. It connects families with resources and information to develop the skills to make healthy food choices, prepare tasty meals on a limited budget, and make the most out of their food dollar. The families in this program are 185% at or below the poverty level, so they qualify for some federal food assistance programs and similar services. Our full-time registered and licensed dietician works with volunteer professional chefs and other nutrition professionals to implement classes. All classes include hands-on cooking, nutrition, food safety and budgeting lessons. Participants learn how to make healthy breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. The different classes offered through Operation Frontline are:
Eating Right is a six week program that teaches low-income adults with children about healthy meal preparation and sensible shopping on a limited budget. Each participant takes home the ingredients needed to duplicate each recipe. This class is also offered in Spanish. Side by Side is a four week series for school-age children and their families to come together in the kitchen to learn about healthy eating and the importance of family mealtime. Topics include fast foods, school meal programs and family dining strategies. Kids Up Front is a six week class designed to teach kids ages 8-12 the basics of nutrition, cooking and healthy eating. The class focuses on hands-on learning, with children preparing healthy, low-cost, and tasty meals and snacks. The Power of Eating Right is a six week program that teaches teens ages 12-18 to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious, delicious low-cost meals and snacks. Each lesson emphasizes the importance of health eating, physical activity, and food safety through hands-on learning activities. Step Up to Eating Right is a six week program teaching teen parents how to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious foods for themselves and their babies. Topics include making healthy, low-cost meals and snacks, the basics of food safety and food budgeting, and specific needs during pregnancy. Each participant takes home the ingredients needed to duplicate a recipe. As these programs expand their missions to help move our clients to self-sufficiency, we will empower the hungry to become more self-sufficient and eventually independent of our assistance and the assistance of the 391 registered agencies we serve throughout the state. Operation Frontline is evaluated for the short term and long term. Therefore we know it has lasting positive impact on people's lives.
